Imagine a band with an lead singer, a flowing melody, and two groups of backup singers, singing, in syncopation, their responses to the lead singer’s calls, but in slightly different ways - each accenting different things. A semblance of symmetry, an actuality of variance. Jazz? A jazz piano? Structured improvisation, a theme, and a bit of dissonance, perhaps?
